Netherbury Flower Show : first Saturday in August

The annual Flower Show spotlights the talents of amateur gardeners and competition is fierce, particularly in the vegetable classes. Judging is strict and although normally a reserved bunch, even the most laconic of Dorset's potato growers will show a gleam of pleasure at the sight of a coveted First Prize for his Wiljas.

Classes include vegetables, fruit, flowers, produce and handicrafts. The flower classes include Roses, Asters, Dahlias, Herbaceous Perennials and Flowering Shrubs, while among the vegetables are Tomatoes, Onions, Shallots, Potatoes and Carrots.

Of course, there are also classes for the longest bean and most mis-shaped vegetable, for those of us whose fingers aren't as green as they might be. At least here there is unlikely to be found the dreaded phrase Not as Schedule scrawled across one's entry card.

The Flower Show is open to visitors from 2.30 to 5.00pm in the Village Hall. Admission is 50p, to include tea and biscuits. Cups will be presented at about 4.30pm.
